Lot description
Ca. 1931-1950
3 panels, 182 x 57 cm each, 40 woodblocks (18 x 14 cm) on each panel, 120 blocks mounted in aluminum frames, some with highlights in white paint.
Impressive triptych made from the authentic woodblocks, cut by the French artist René Georges Hermann-Paul (1864-1940). The blocks were originally designed and cut to illustrate the 1929-1931 edition of Don Quichote, translated by Xavier Cardaillac and Jean Labarthe (Liège, Editions du Balancier, 1929). The publication was illustrated with 126 woodcuts. Almost half of those were re-used in this decorative piece of artwork.
