Old vellum (18th c.), spine with raised bands, red edges (some stains).

Only incunable ed. of this compilation of medieval astronomical knowledge by Leopold, Duke of Austria (1176-1230), dealing with the Zodiac, the planetary system, meteorology and theology. Ill. with numerous woodcuts: large "Sphaera mundi" (a2r), 35 large ill. of mythological figures and Zodiac signs, 54 half-page diagrams. Printed in Gothic type. Extensive contemp. ms. notes (some cropped). The dedicatory letter to Ulrich of Frundsperg, bishop of Trento, is signed by the German printer Ratdolt (1442–1528) who worked from 1476 to 1486 in Venice and printed there in 1482 the second edition of Hygienus's "Poeticon astronomicon", the first illustrated book with astronomical woodcuts.
