Rare French translation by the Jesuit Morin of the "De Christianis apud Iaponios Triumphis" (1st ed. 1623) by Trigault (1577-1629), an important protagonist of the Catholic missionary effort in Asia, especially in China. It is a work with an edifying rather than historical vocation, but which evokes the fascinating encounter between East and West. Ill. with an engr. title (signed "Van Lochoem fec"), 2 engr. and 3 full-page engr. depicting the various tortures suffered by the missionaries in Japan (one with trace of censorship regarding women nudity).
