Sewn in later decorated paper covers. Very good impression.

Rare complete set in 1st impression incl. a title, a portrait of Augustinus and 26 plates engraved by S.A. Bolswert but pl. 21 & 23 by C. Galle. Commissioned by G. Maigret (1573-1633), Augustinian theologian and superior of the "Provincia Belgica" of his Order at the time. "The Augustinian series of Bolswert and Galle exerted tremendous influence around the world. In the Americas it served as a model to several series on the life of Saint Augustine" (Pessca).  Ref.
