Lot description

Wien, J.Th. Trattner, 1757

Lge 4to: [6]-88-[4] pp. (blank pp. 63-64 missing; a few quires toned).

19th-c. romantic binding: gold-tooled blind-stamped red morocco, covers with gilt ruled frames and gilt floral ornaments, gilt flat spine, a.e.g., gilt inside dentelles. Very good large paper copy.

Very rare 18th-c. repr. of the 1626 Moretus ed. of the Statutes of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The Latin translation most probably was the work of the Dutch Neo-Latin poet Nicolaus Grudius (Everardi, 1504-1570), treasurer of the Order. With copies of the two engraved plates by Cornelis Galle (1576-1650), i.a. the collar of the Order with the Burgundian device "Ante ferit quam flamma micet" ("The flint is sent before to yield fire - Il frappe avant que la flamme ne brille" - the flint-stones represent the ancient arms of the sovereigns of Burgundy).
Ref. Not in VD18.
Bound with: Les ordonnances de l’Ordre de la Toison d’Or. Ibidem, 1757. [6]-79-[9] pp. Ref. Conlon 57:313. - Not in VD18.
