Lot description

Antwerp, Th. van Thulden (col.: J. Meursius), 1641

Very large folio: [10]-189-[13] pp. (some staining near edges, some pl. cut a bit short, some pl. browned, some occ. soiling, sm. mouldy spots at f. Yyy, sm. repair in front. and pl. 12, equestrian portrait mounted and rep. in blank inner margin).

Old goldtooled vellum (some light stains, corners bumped), covers with gilt coat of arms within double gilt-ruled frame with corner pieces, flat spine (sm. def. at head & tail), a.e.g. Good copy.

Magnificent publication on the Entry into Antwerp of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in 1635. The production was delayed on account of financial problems, the untimely death of a major collaborator (Rubens, May 1640), and almost halted by the death of Ferdinand himself (November 1641). The ed. has a number of variants, as described by Arents. This copy includes the half-title (7 ll., Arents a), and the rare equestrian portrait by P. Pontius (but not the numbered, half-length portrait; equestrian portrait printed on different contemp. paper, from another copy?). Complete with 39 full- or double-page engr. by Th. van Thulden after Rubens, depicting the arches and stages built and the paintings adorning them, a nice view of Antwerp Cathedral and a large bird's-eye view of the city of Antwerp (39 plates, 2 with 3 engr. each); with also 47 small engr. in-text (coins and medals). The title page (without the name of the engraver Jac. Neeffs) shows the original imprint (Arents a); the colophon bears the intended date 1641 (and not the exact date "1642"). Traces of ink censorship of female body parts on more than half of the plates.
Ref. Arents, "Pompa Introitus Ferdinandi. Bijdrage tot de Rubensbibliografie" in: De Gulden Passer. 27 (1949), pp. 81–348. - BB III:193-196:G-370. - Landwehr (Splendid ceremonies) 99. - Judson/VdVelde (Rubens) 81. - STCV (various issues).
Prov. Gilt Spanish royal arms on covers. - Stamp & paper label on half title, stamps on verso title.
