Large folio: engraved allegorical title, 31 double-page pl. mounted on guards, delicately old hand-coloured (letterpress title-page and index leaf missing, repairs to corners, margins and margin. tears, pl. 1 sl. soiled).

Mod. half calf, marbled paper boards, spine with 7 raised bands (very few tr. of use).

First (and only) edition of Doppelmayr's impressive celestial atlas resulting from the collaboration with Germany's leading map publisher J.B. Homann. With engr. title by J.C. Reinsperger after J.J. Preisler showing Ptolemy, Copernicus, Kepler and Tycho Brahe discussing the planetary motions and the complete set of the 30 engr. pl. Including star charts and a selenographic map, diagrams illustrating the planetary systems of Copernicus, Brahe, and Riccioli; the elliptic theories of Kepler, Boulliau, Seth Ward, and Mercator; the lunar theories of Brahe, Horrocks, and Newton; and Halley's theory of comets. While many maps have plate numbers corresponding to their sequence in the atlas (as in C.DOP-1c), others were hand-numbered. They are older and date from before the plate numbering.
