Lot description

Engr., 35,5 x 28 cm, hand-coloured (delicately toned).

Framed.

First issued in Arnoldus Montanus' (1625-1683) monumental "De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America" (Amsterdam, J. Meurs, 1671), later translated into English by John Ogilby (1600-1676). Never himself actually travelling beyond Europe, Montanus borrowed from descriptions of those who had.
1. "Arx Carolina". Given that Montanus’ 1671 image of Arx Carolina was reprinted ca. 1710 with the subtitle “Charles Fort, sur Floride" it is most likely depicting the 1564 French settlement of Fort Caroline at Jacksonville, Florida (and not the 1563 French settlement at Parris Island, South Carolina). - 2. "Pagus Hispanorum in Florida". St. Augustine. - 3. "Carthagena". Colombia. - 4. "Sinus omnium sanctorum". Bahia de Todos Sanctos in Brazil.
Ref.
Borba de Moraes, p. 76-77. - Sabin 50089.
