Interesting collection of sketches by Ferdinand de Braekeleer (1797-1883), mostly preparatory studies for paintings with interior scenes. One drawing signed, some with dates, ranging from 1849 to 1863. Including five sheets of an oblong sketchbook with drawings of figure studies, Antwerp harbour, horses and 17th-century figures of English nobility such as Oliver Cromwell. Many of the sketches are provided with annotations in de Braekeleer's handwriting. The collection offers a unique insight into the artistic development of this great Antwerp genre painter.
