Lot description

Ca. 1580-1620

Drawing, pen and black ink, with grey wash, 26,3 x 20 cm, laid paper, unsigned (probably trimmed at the left and lower edge, one small hole near the farmer's hand, second hole at tree group at upper right, retouches of farmer's leg, some orange foxing spots at upper half).

Under passe-partout.

An interesting landscape with a farmer at the foreground. A hand with a shovel (?) can be seen in the left corner, suggesting that the drawing was part of a larger composition. In the style of Paul Bril (1554-1626) and his followers.
A drawing of the muse Clio on verso in pen and black ink and grey wash by a different hand. With caption in brown ink "Bologna / no. 121". Possibly after the Bolognese artist Primaticcio.
Prov. Michael Ingram (coll. stamp, Lugt 1405). - Sotheby's sale 08/12/2005, no. 81.
