Lot description
Basel, J. Froben, August 1525
8vo: [360] pp. (sl. soiled at beginning and end, title skilfully underlaid).
Loose in orig. limp overlapping vellum wrappers, back sewn on leather strip, with parts of old vellum ms. leaves as endpaper. Excellent copy.
Very rare editio princeps of one of Erasmus' most influential writings. It deals with the use and abuse of the power of the human tongue ("speech" & "fake news"); the book is dedicated to the influential and wealthy Polish chancellor and diplomat, Krzystof Szydłowiecki (1467-1532), who thanked Erasmus with a rich gift of gold. As usual this Erasmus' first was printed by his Basel publisher and friend Johann Froben (active 1491-1527). Woodcut Froben mark on title and at the end.

Prov. Some contemp. underlinings and marginal notes.
