VAN LEYDEN, Lucas
Engraving, 11,8 x 7,5 cm, thin laid paper, dated and signed with monogram in the plate at lower right corner "L 1521" (trimmed irregularly to the borderline, small thread margin at bottom, sm. horizontal crease).
Christ at centre buckled to his knees under the weight of the cross as he walks to the left; Veronica kneels beside him to the right raising a cloth to wipe his face. Part of the famous Passion series (14 pl.) which Van Leyden made in 1521, probably after being inspired by Dürer's own passion series. Good impression of the second state (of 3) with the address of the Antwerp printmaker and editor Maarten Peeters who had bought a large part of the original plates from the heirs of Lucas van Leyden.
Ref. New Hollstein (Lucas van Leyden), 51.2.
Prov. Unknown collector's mark MVH on verso (not in Lugt).
