Late 19th-c. dark brown morocco signed Allô & Wampflug, covers with gilt crowned arms within double gilt-ruled border, spine with 5 raised bands and gilt title and monogram "VM" in gilt-ruled compartments, gilt sides, gilt orn. inside dentelles, a.e.g., marbled endpapers (corners, head & tail very lightly rubbed). Very good copy in a luxury binding.

First Dutch edition of the prophetic visions of the Byzantine Emperors Leo VI and Severus on the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Ill. with 16 engr. plates showing slightly emblematic scenes featuring i.a. sultans Mehmet II and Suleiman I, animals such as unicorns, nursing bears, eagles, ravens, wolves, snakes, etc. Each plate is followed by an epigram and/or explication. Large woodcut on title showing the Ottomans reaching Constantinople.
