54 vol., 4to.
Contemp. marbled wrappers ("reliure d'attente") (set in rather used condition). Not collated, sold w.a.f.
First edition of this famous encyclopedia edited by Fortunato Bartolomeo de Felice (Rome 1723-1789 Yverdon), Italian nobleman and enlightened philosopher and writer. Present in our set are 38 text vol. (of 42; vol. 1, 8, 35, 41 missing), 6 suppl. vol. and the 10 vol. of plates containing +/- 1.200 engr. pl. De Felice wrote more than 800 articles himself; other important contributors were Leonhard Euler, Charles François Dupuis, Jérôme Lalande, Albrecht von Haller, etc. Printed in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, this "Encyclopédie d'Yverdon" was based on the famous "Encyclopédie de Paris" of Diderot and d'Alembert (1751-1772), but turned increasingly anti-religious. Hence the alternative name "Protestant Encyclopedia" and its large success in northern Europe.
