Contemp. overl. vellum (some stains), flat spine (sm. lack of vellum).

Very rare first edition of this work on the Caesarian section by the Dutch physician D. van der Sterren (d. 1691). Ill. with 4 engr. pl. After first practising medicine in Holland, van der Sterren went to the West Indies and Curaçao where he took care of the slaves ("ter besorginge van de negros slaven"). In this treatise he was the first (before van Deventer) to describe the malpositioning of the uterus. He also emphasised the fact that a foetus can live on some time after the the mother's death in which case a Caesarian section is essential for the survival of the child. With three part-titles.
