Lot description

17th-c. dark brown calf, gilt orn. spine with raised bands (very used, spine broken, a shabby copy).

First and only edition of this rare beautiful complete set of 93 woodcuts by Jost Amman (1539-1591), considered as his masterpiece, depicting scenes of the New Testament with elegant characters in realistic scenes and containing numerous details or architectural perspectives, giving this book great historical value. With a dedicatory epistle in which Sigmund Feyerabend (1528-1590) praised Germany's most famous painters and engravers. After Dürer, Amman should be considered as one of the most important German engravers of the 16th c.
