Lot description

Rome, G. G. de Rossi, 1689

Composite map of 4 engr., in total: 108 x 89 cm (some brown spots, glue stain).

Framed.

Large wall map engraved by the Italian Antonio Barbey after Giacomo Cantelli da Vigna with a large and richly decorated cartouche dedicated to Ranuccio II Farnese (1630-1694), duke of Parma. As a matter of fact, it was Ranuccio's grandfather, Alexander Farnese, who was Governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1578 to 1592 and is best known for successfully reconquering the Southern Netherlands after the Dutch Revolt (1578-1592).
The map was published in Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi's atlas "Mercurio Geografico" (Rome, Rossi, 1692). Rossi's atlas was known for its splendid Italian baroque detail, high quality paper, bold Roman lettering, and dark rich ink. It includes mainly maps from Cantelli da Vignola. This important seventeenth-century cartographer pioneered the Italian style of fine bold engraving, later embraced by Vincenzo Coronelli.
Ref. van der Heijden II/179.
