Lot description

Amsterdam, Wid. J. Van Egmont, 1746

Etching, 56 x 41,5 cm (printed area), 37,2 x 39 cm (etching), laid paper (some old creases).

A broadside satirising Prince Charles Edward, the Young Pretender and Jacobite's efforts to restore the Stuart dynasty to the British throne, linkening the political events to a poor acrobatic performance. With an etching by de Hooghe, originally printed in 1689, showing the interior of a tent, in the centre a tight-rope with various performers, one performer (no. 17) falling down, representing the Young Pretender. In the background a group of spectators representing various countries of Europe, in the foreground further spectators and an orchestra, the violincello player representing Louis XV of France (no.3). With engraved French and Dutch titles and numbering 1-23, and with Dutch, English, French letterpress titles and legends in six columns. Second state of 1746.
Ref. Landwehr 222.II. - Muller 2766b. - Hollstein IX:160.
