Lot description

Strasbourg, by Flach, at the expense of J. Knobloch, 1511

8vo: lxxix-[1] ff. (incomplete of the 4 prelims; damp stains, some on all the ff., other ff. sl. browned, marginal tears stengthened, some stains).

17th-c. mottled calf, covers ruled with a blind fillet, spine with raised bands ruled with gilt fillets, red sprinkled edges (sl. rubbed, wormholes repaired and stains on lower cover, lower corners dulled).

Pedagogical work (1st ed.: 1500) by Wimpfeling (1450-1528), Alsacian humanist and theologian, intended to provide moral education to young people at a time where the Church crisis had lead to poor education. Supported by texts or quotes of a.o. Cicero, Plato, Eusebius, Lactantius, Petrarch and Aenas Silvius (i.e. Pius II) and followed by 20 laws to promote good grounding in morals.
