Lot description

8vo: [50 incl. front.]-803-[68] pp. (lacking title, heavily dampstained throughout, some sm. tears in some pp.).

Contemp. calf, gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands (some tiny wormholes). Obviously often consulted.

Second edition with this title of the work by the French surgeon J. Guillemeau (1550-1613) re-edited by his son Charles (1588-1656). Orig. publ. as "L'heureux accouchements des femmes" in 1609. Illustrated with an engr. title by Briot, dated 1642 and 18 engr. in-text. "Actual origin of the so-called "Mauriceau" manoeuvre, usually credited to Mauriceau. Guillemeau was not only responsible for this technique for delivery of the aftercoming head so important before the forceps and Caesarian section, but he was also the first to employ podalic version in placenta praevia" (Garrison & Morton).
