Lot description

Folio: [8]-221-[1] ff. (first margins torn, wormholes in the text in the first quarter, marginal damp stains throughout, small foxing, some ink stains, some ff. slightly browned, underlinings and a few annotations).

Contemp. blind stamped pigskin over wooden boards, decorated covers with fillets and roll-stamps, spine with raised bands (partly rubbed, wormholes, stains - one darker -, front joint partly split, clasps lacking, some lacks of leather).

Latin translation by Joannes Oekolampad of the commentary on the Gospels by Theophylactus (ca. 1055-c. 1107), Greek archbishop of Ochrid, founded on those of the Church Father Chrysostom. The first edition was published in 1524. Typographical title within a historiated frame figuring the four Evangelists, the Apostles and, above, God with his Son. Text decorated with initials (one large), mostly with cherubs, first page of text in an ornamental woodcut frame, some ornamental headpieces and printer's device on the verso of last leaf.

First edition of the commentary on the Psalms by Arnobius edited and revised by Erasmus, also with his own commentaries following. Title within a historiated frame (gods and goddesses, virtues), 2 first pages of text in an ornamental frame, text illustrated with ornamental initials (one large), rare ornamental headpieces and printer's mark on the verso of last leaf.
