Lot description

Brussels, 19 November 1615

Vellum, ca. 67 x 56 cm, rolled (some loss of paint and gilt in the roll fold).

Spectacular large coat of arms showing "les vrayes et propres armoiries de la noble famille de flaminck alias Van Belle" (ms. text at verso). This document must have served as an official notarial attestation of the arms of the family de Vlaminck: on the shield a gilt escarbuncle ending on fleur-de-lys on a field of red and green vertical pales. According to the text on verso, the coat of arms is painted after depictions in "plusieurs livres et vitrines de l'eglise metropolitaine de S. Rombault à Malines [...] en la chapelle desd. de Flaminck en lasd. église". The text is signed by Michiel Maurissens (Lokeren 1565-1652), as "notaire et tabellion publique". Maurissens served for more than 50 years as Herald and King of Arms of Flanders, i.a. under the archdukes Albert and Isabella. The family de Vlaminck was introduced into the nobility by Charles V in 1521.
Ref. Armorial de la noblesse belge III, p. 774.
