Lot description

Nürnberg, J. Petreius, 1538

4to: [13-1 bl.]-133-[1 bl.] ff. (clear dampstain at upper part, front endpaper rep., very sm. defects to title).

Nice 16th-c. Flemish binding: blind panel stamped calf (for the larger part expertly rebacked, corners bumped, sm. cut in back panel, both titles of included works written in a contemp. hand at upper part of front board): on both boards identical rectangular acorn panels ca. 16 x 10 cm, spine with 4 raised bands (sl. rubbed), ties gone, contemp. Dutch archival ms. used as pastedowns. Nice copy.

First edition of this early humanist history of Flanders by Jacobus Meyerus (1491-1552), from the Counts of Flanders until Charles the Bold. In an unsigned 16th-c. Flemish panel stamped binding: two rows of acorn cresting (five acorns opposing four and two halves) with a flower on the top of each. Around this a border, with on either side a wyvern between branches of flowers and acorns, in each corner an artichoke. At the bottom an empty escutcheon. This binding is identical to the Flemish panel (1530) described in Goldschmidt 135, and in the style of Hans van Collen and Jehan Norins (Goldschmidt 131), a Paris binder active in Leuven (according to Pr. Verheyden in "De Gulden Passer" 1941 p. 211).

Prov. Ownership entries on title. - Some underlinings. - "Bibliotheca Elseghemensis", i.e. Amaury de Ghellinck d’Elseghem (1851-1919) (mod. bookpl.).

Iacobum Spiegelium. Basel, Herwagen Press (Johann Herwagen & Jo. Eras. Froben), 1538. [8]-278 (= 290)-[1 bl.-1] pp. (clear dampstain at upper part, sm. tear in a2 taking some letters, sm. wormholes in blank margin of last 2 quires, last f. partly underlaid with loss of part of the mark). Early ed. (1st 1485) of a collection of anecdotes about Alfonso V of Aragon (1396-1458), i.a. King of Sicily and Naples, by the Italian humanist A. Beccadelli (Panormita: Pseud., 1394-1471).
