Lot description

2nd half 19th c

36 sepia-toned photos, various sizes, mostly 25 x 19 cm, stuck on paper (one loose).

Kept in a half red leather folio album, gilt titled cloth covers (corners rubbed), flat spine (head and tail rubbed, sm. def. at tail).

People in traditional clothing: black woman with child, a Bedouin, a Moorish woman, a young Kabyle woman, a Jewish woman, a Jewish woman and a girl from Tunisia, an Arab from Tunis. Views and places: views of Algiers, Constantine, Tunis and Annaba, the Palace of the governor Mustapha-Superieur, a Moorish interior, the Chiffa gorge in the Tell Atlas Mountains of northern Algeria, the kasbah of Algiers, palm trees in the Test Garden of Hamma, the former palace of the Bey, an Arabic market place, the Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunis, Bardo Palace, etc. A loose photo with visible stamp on verso: "Eugène Michel, Photographe-Paysagiste, Editeur. Types et Paysages d'Algérie, scènes de la vie arabe". Probably the images originate from this and other collections.
Joined: 53 photo postcards, cabinet-, and visiting cards. End 19th c.-first years of 20th c. Kept in a brown leather 4to album with metal embossed front cover with inital "F", clasp and catch, silk endpapers and gilt inside dentelles. Some photographer's names: R. Melchers, Géruzet Frères, Ghémar Frères, Dupont, Hector de Saedeler. Family album of a certain family Fourcault. (2 vol.)
