Lot description

2 and 3 March 1934

72 photos, b/w, ca. 9 to 11 x 14,5 to 7 cm + 13 b/w photo postcards, captioned with typewriter.

Retained by corners in 2 albums.

Photos of natives: many dance scenes, canoes approching foreign boats, views of landscapes, etc., taken in Port Moresby and Pari village. The 13 photo postcards by Gilson of Moresby are caricatures: women breastfeeding puppies, grimacing man, poses with masks or head ornaments. In the aftermath of the scientific expedition of Prince Leopold in 1933, Jean Thevenet, lawyer, columnist and correspondent, and member of the Royal Society of Geography of Antwerp, made a private semi-scientific reporting concerning New Guinea. These albums are accompanied by 3 chronicles drawn up for the newspaper "La Libre Belgique" as well as 9 maps. In 1935, he published his chronicles of Oceania in the "Revue Catholique des Idées et des Faits" (Catholic Journal of ideas and Facts). His albums featuring Melasia and Micronesia were bought by the Hawai'i University.
