Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [22]-342-[2 bl.], [6]-208 pp. (toned, sm. wormhole in blank bottom first few quires).

Contemp. sheep (some tears, corners bumped), richly gilt spine with 6 raised bands (joints rubbed, sm. def. head & tail), red leather title label, gilt sides, red edges, marbl. endpapers.

Parts 1 & 4 of this historical work on the United Provinces of the Netherlands by the Swiss theologian and biblical scholar Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736). He settled in Amsterdam in 1684 and became professor of philosophy, literature and Hebrew at the Remonstrant seminary. Engr. ill.: allegorical front. by B. Picart, 2 title vign. by B. Picart, 2 headpieces by J. Schynvoet, coat of arms of the dedicatee Jean Henri, count of Wassenar, double-page folding map ("Carte des Provinces Unies des Pays Bas"), large folding pl. by D. Marot titled "La grande sale d'audience de La Haye" and 247 ill. in 4th part (some full-page) depicting 396 medals and coins. Part titles printed in red & black. Parts 2 & 3 were later publ. (1728).
