12mo: [22]-447 ff. (lacking ff. 282-283 & 385-397; sl. browned, upper corner of f. 78 lacking, dampstaining to some corners).
17th-c. overl. vellum, gilt central lozenge-shape ornament on covers, gilt orn. flat spine, ties (rebacked, front joint starting to split, gilt faded).
Rare translation by Gabriel Chappuys (1st Fr. ed.: Paris, 1584) of Equicola's famous work on love, for which he studied various poets. Although composed between 1494 and 1496, it was first published in Italian in Venice 1525. Equicola (ca. 1470-1525) was a Renaissance humanist, bibliophile and a courtier of Isabella d'Este and Federico II Gonzaga. Printer's mark on title.
