Half calf, paper on boards, gilt spine with 5 raised bands, leather labels (worn, corners bumped, spine dam.).
First edition of this translation, first published in 1775-1778 under the title "Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe". Ill. with 2 engr. title vign., 8 full-page engr. and 15 engr. in-texto. Lavater (1741-1801) is one of the last descriptive physiomists and his findings in this influential work were supported by, for example, the English physicist and philosopher Thomas Browne.
