Lot description

Leipzig, J. Wittigau for Chr. Kirchner, 1657

7 parts in 1 vol., folio: [24]-183-[1]-283-[1 bl.]-84-203-[1 bl.], [42]-70-[10]-292-160 (some minor toning and spotting, sm. hole in top margin of 5 initial ff. of NT).

Contemp. blind-stamped pigskin, spine with 5 raised bands, covers with central panel portrait stamps of Luther and Melanchthon (sl. rubbed at edges, sm. def. at head and lower cover, mod. endpapers). Nice copy.

The very interesting and famous Saxon Polyglot of 1657, authorized by the Elector of Saxony for the Lutheran churches. It contains the Hebrew OT contrasted with the Latin text of Santes Pagninus (1470-1536), together with the Greek NT contrasted with the Latin Vulgate text, both collated and edited by B. Arias Montanus (1527-1598) for the Plantin Polyglot. This is followed by the “Bibliorum pars quae Hebraice non invenitur”, the Greek (Septuagint) version of the books not in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) (e.g. Tobias, Judith, Esther). Engraved OT title; large engraving on NT title.
Ref. Bibles Paris 83-84. - VD-17 3:006804G. - Paisey (BL) B-972. - Not in Darlow/Moule.
*** Prov. Extensive old annotation to "Liber Joel". - Contemp. German name on old flyleaves.
