Lot description

Leiden, 1792

Drawing, pen and black, brown and blue ink, watercolour, 33,2 x 43,5 cm, laid paper with watermark (some sm. foxing, blue ink stains on verso).

Stuck by edges under passe-partout with red painted frame.

Rare and very nice trompe l'oeil drawing creating the illusion of a bulletin board with newspapers cuttings, psalm songs and decorative prints. During the Dutch Golden Age the trompe l'oeil was developed by artists such as Samuel van Hoogstraten into an individual genre to showcase one's mastering of perspective. They were also called "bedriegertjes". The Dutch draftsman Jacob Izaak Domus (1768-1806) was a Leiden school teacher who's trompe l'oeil drawings can be seen as a charming continuation of this tradition. Watermark in paper of "Jan Honig en Zoonen" (Heawood I: 1841-41).
