Contemp. calf. gilt. orn spine on 5 raised bands (def. at head of vol. 5). Good copy.
5th edition (first 1682) of this work on paintings made for Louis XIV by Félibien (1619-1695), official court historian. Inspired by Vasari, the Entretiens set the nascent discipline of art criticism on a sound logical footings and also served the purpose of advancing the reputations of French artists, sometimes at the expense of artists of other nationalities. This edition also includes "La vie des Architectes", an additional volume on the work of French architects. Illustr. with 8 folding engr. depicting the Roman country house of Pliny (the Elder) after Scamozzi. Each vol. opens with a full-page engr. front.
