Cologne, Birckmann Press for A. Mylius, 1589

Folio: [4]-541-[1-2 bl.-35-1 bl.] pp. (some browning or spotting, occ. marg. dampstains; sm. spot in map).

Old overl. vellum, flat spine titled in ink (def. at tail, remains of ties, endpapers lifted). Overall a good copy in a sl. used binding.

Early and first German edition of the famous history of the Jesuit missions in Asia, Brazil and Peru, compiled by the Italian Jesuit Maffei (1533-1603), first published Florence 1588. At the end his popular Life of the Society's founding father Ignatius de Loyola. Contains the rare folding world map based on Ortelius' "Typus Orbis Terrarum" (1570). "Later issues [of the book] are recorded from Venice, Bergamo and Antwerp but only those from Cologne in 1589 and 1593 contain a world map. A skilled engraver has copied Ortelius' 1570 world map with a new title placed over the northern parts and with strapwork in the corners" (Shirley). Woodcut mark on title.
