Lot description

8vo: [32]-551-[9] pp. (age-toned, sm. wormholes, occ. foxing).

Contemp. gilt stamped limp vellum, gilt edges, gilt orn. flat spine with title in ink (sl. rubbed, ties missing). Very nice copy.

Sailly (1553-1624) became a priest in 1578 and went to Rome in 1580 where he joined the Jesuits. Alexander Farnese appointed him as head of the Jesuits who followed the army during the military campaigns in order to look after the religious welfare of the soldiers. With engr. title page and 27 engr. pl. by Th. Galle after A. Van Noort and P. de Jode. It is considered one of the finest productions of the Plantin Press under Jan Moretus.
