Lot description

[Nürnberg, M. Engelbrecht, 1700-1720]

Engraving, hand-coloured, 30 x 18,5 cm, laid paper (sl. toned, repairs at lower edge).

A caricature of the Dutch whaler Piters, depicted as a dwarf. Part of the popular print series "Il Callotto Reuscitato" (50 pl), published by Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756). It depicts humorous caricatures of dwarfs as representations of all layers of the early eighteenth-century society. Loosely based upon Jacques Callot's "Varie Figure Gobbi", these prints answered a growing demand for this kind of satirical imagery. All engravings are accompanied with verses in gothic type, mostly in German, but also in French, Dutch or local German dialects, depending on the depicted subject. This print was from a Dutch republished edition with an orn. border which includes a dwarf as a print salesman.
