Lot description

8vo: [8]-iv-268 pp. (some occ. foxing, browning and soiling throughout).

Contemp. red quarter shagreen, red cloth boards bordered with a single gilt fillet with elaborated corners, gilt spine on 4 raised bands, gilt edges, silk endpapers (some wear and spotting, joints slightly starting to split, corners bumped). Good copy.

Second edition (first 1872 according to Nissen, nevertheless not found) of this work on the history and the different types of roses by the horticulturist Hippolyte Jamain and professor of arboriculture Eugène Forney. The study, dedicated to the duchess of Cambridge, is illustrated with 60 beautiful coloured lithographic plates (by F. Gobron) depicting various rose varieties (some on tinted background), besides numerous black and white in-text illustrations. Ref. Nissen (BBI) 982. - Bn-Opale plus.
