16mo: 514-[2 bl.] pp. (clear dampstains to first ff., tear to lower margin of p. 177).
19th-c. olive green morocco, triple giltruled covers with flower tool in the corners, gilt orn. flat spine, a.e.g., gilt inside dentelle (traces of use, front joint starting to split, a few ff. cut short).
French translation by François de Belleforest (1st ed.: 1568) of Achilles' work, based on the Latin translation of Luigi Annibale della Croce. It is one of the five surviving Ancient Greek romances. Achilles Tatius of Alexandria (2nd c.) converted to Christianism at the end of his life and became bishop according to the Suda. Medallion portrait on title. Some ornamental initials (2 dotted). Ref.
