Lot description

[c. 1822]

Drawing, brush and brown wash, heightened with white wash over black chalk, 48,5 x 32,5 cm, laid paper (sl. waterstaining at upper edge).

Stuck by corners under passe-partout.

The subject, orientation and composition of this drawing is identical to that of a lithography dated 1822, executed by Géricault and Joseph Simon Volmar (1796-1865). Its rendering shows a strong relationship to similar drawings by Géricault in the handling of shades, skies and his idiosyncratic light contrasts. In particular the treatment of shades and colour tones in the horse recalls similar studies by Géricault - a favoured subject of the artist. It is not unusual for a Géricault drawing to be oriented in the same direction as the litho is. A sheet in the Bühler collection, which represents horses in a similarly handled manner, and drawings in the album preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago are equally not in reverse. This makes the involvement of Géricault in this drawing most plausible. Ref. Hyman 2010, p. 192, no. 89. - Delteil no. 89.
