Lot description

10-09-1933

26 b/w photos (except 4 loose, by photographer & reporter Georges Mahy), 17 x 23 cm or 18 x 24 cm, pasted on cardboard ff. and protected with tissue guards, ms. captions in French.

4to oblong album in brown cloth (traces of use).

The construction of the pedestrian Sint-Annatunnel with its famous wooden Art Deco escalators started in 1931 and was given to the "Compagnie internationale des pieux armés Frankignoul", a company from Liège founded in 1911 by Edgar Frankignoul. A car tunnel was also built at the same time. The photos represent the Royal box (with Elisabeth, Albert I, Astrid and Léopold III) during the inauguration, the awards and congratulations to E. Frankignoul and to the people who helped in the constructions (Mr Dewandre, the engineer Henry etc.), the royal family after walking through the tunnel and the cars, the crowd on the right bank of the Scheldt during the ceremony, the inside of the tunnels, the entrance building of the Sint-Annatunnel, etc. 4 loose pictures figure a visit of Queen Elisabeth during its construction?
