Firenze, for P. Matini

4to (good inside condition).

Cont. vellum, flat spine titled in ink.

The Italian physician and biologist Redi (1626-1697) is considered the founder of experimental biology and modern parasitology. 1. Osservazioni intorno agli animali viventi che si trovano negli animali viventi. 1684. [8]-232 pp.; 26 pl. (hole in p. 151 due to the lightness of the paper, min. hole in pl. 9). First edition of this work describing 108 species of parasites. Illustrated with 26 plates (2 fold.). Issue without the author's portrait and the errata. Mark with "Il frullone" of the Accademia della Crusca on the red & black title. Ref. Wellcome IV:488. - Krivatsy 9458 (other issue in 253 pp.). - Bibl. Walleriana 11939 (other issue). - Nissen (ZBI) 3323. 2. Osservazioni intorno alle vipere [...]. 1686. 66 pp. (foxing). Important work adressed to his friend Lorenzo Magalotti, in which Redi breaks the common beliefs of the time concerning the vipers (the venom is poisonous if swallowed, their heads are an antidote...). He demonstrated with experiments that the venom is poisonous only when it enters the bloodstream after a bite and that the venom, in the form of yellow fluid, is contained in the fangs. He also demonstrated that the passage of venom into the heart could be prevented by a tight legature before the wound. This work marked the beginning of experimental toxinology and toxicology. Marks of the "Accademia della Crusca" copper engr. on the red & black title and another wood engr. at colophon. Ref. Wellcome IV:488 (1st ed. of 1664). - Krivatsy 9462. - Not in Bibl. Walleriana, Nissen (ZBI). 3. Lettera [...] sopra alcune opposizioni fatte alle sue osservazini intorno alle vipere. Scritta alli signori Alessandro Moro e Abate Bourdelot. 1685. 31-[1] pp. (some foxing). Response to the work "Nouvelles expériences sur la vipère" by Charas published in 1669 which contradicted Redi's arguments. Title printed in red & black. Ref. Wellcome IV:488. - Krivatsy 9455. - Not in Bibl. Walleriana, Nissen (ZBI).
