Folio: CII (= 100)-[4] ff., 55 ll. (cut somewhat short, toned and spotted, occ. dampstaining, minor worming in blank bottom margin).

Mod. brown morocco, gilt titled spine on 6 raised bands, gilt inside dentelles, decorative endpapers (sl. rubbed). Good copy.

Rare Paris ed. of the main work of Saint Isidore of Seville (560-636), “the last scholar of the ancient world” (Montalembert). It is an etymological encyclopedia which assembled extracts of many books from classical antiquity that would have otherwise been lost. Woodcut marks of Petit (title) and Kerver (at end). Full-page woodcut genealogical tree (50r). Sm. woodcut map (71r) and diagrams. Printed in 2 columns, in roman type. Ref.
