Amsterdam, Leipzig, [Arkstee & Merkus ; new address label pasted on: Paris, Jombert, 1749]

4to: [8]-xiv-333-[1] pp. (sl. brown. throughout, a few marg. stains, unobtrusive marg. worm track in last 50 ff., tear without lack of paper in the 2 larger maps, one part. strengthened, f. 2T2 loosening).

Cont. calf (sl. rubbed), gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands (front joint splitting, defect. at head and tail), red leather label, marbled edges. Good copy.

1st edition of the French translation of "A voyage round the world" (1748) by Elias de Joncourt (1697-1765). Relation of the famous and unfortunate expedition around the world made in 3 years and 9 months by G. Anson (1697-1762) where only 188 men of the original 1854 crew survived. With descriptions on the island of Madeira, Brazil, port St. Julian, Cape Horn, the island of Juan Fernandes, the taking of Paita, the arrival at Quibo, the coast of Mexico, Macao, etc. Ill. with a nice title-vign. by Folkema, 1 headpiece i.e. 1 coat-of-arms by J.C. Philips and complete with 34 plates, most folding, including 2 larger maps (South America and Pacific Ocean) and showing num. views of sea coasts, maps and plans, sea battles, Chinese vessels, a couple of sea lions, etc. Ref.
