3 parts in 1 vol., 8vo: [22]-370, [12]-228, [18]-280 pp. (missing: "Avis au relieur" in vol. I, half-titles in vol. II & III, 6 pl.; paper sl. brown.).

Contemp. calf (sl. rubbed), gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands (rubbed), red leather label, spr. edges.

1st edition of the French translation by Jean Bertrand (1708-1777) of "Caput Bonae Spei hodiernum; das ist vollständige Beschreibung [...]" (1st Nuremberg, 1719), a detailed travel account of the Cape of Good Hope by the German traveller and naturalist P. Kolb (1675-1726), who lived and worked at the Cape from 1705 till 1713. With descriptions on the Cape's geography, climate, Hottentot customs (religion, education) based on his experience. Ill. with a frontisp., 3 title-vign. by J.v.S., 5 folding maps (complete i.a. "Caarte van de Oost-kust van Africa, van Mosambique tot digt aan Kaap de Goede Hoop", "Caarte van de Colonie van de Kaap") and 19 plates (of 25) incl. 1 folding (some signed S. Fokke), depicting fauna (zebra, elephant, tiger, monkeys) and some figures or scenes of the life of the Hottentots. Ref.
