Lot description

[C. 1868-1871]

Albumen or salted paper prints, +/- 15 x 20 cm, fully glued on heavy cardboards, 21,5 x 27 cm, mss ink numbers, mss pencil names of houses and owners (in French) on the reverse (sl. foxing).

Loose under contemp. marbled paper portfolio (used, one joint partly split).

Series (apparently complete) of photographs, unsigned but probably by Damseaux (1830-1930), former artillery officer residing in Ghlin. He photographed castles located in Belgium, from which the Vasseur brothers at Tournai printed lithographs. These lithographs were distributed, from 1872 to 1878, by the Mons bookseller Émile Dacquin under the title "La Belgique pittoresque: Les châteaux". Our series (mainly unpublished views) contains: Kruishoutem (Mrs. Desmanet de Biesme), Sint-Denijs-Westrem (3 estates: Baron Pycke, Gonthyn, Soenens), Melle (2 estates: de Potter d'Indoye, Mrs. Casin), Maltebrugge (J. de Hemptinne), Olsene (Piers), Grand Noble at De Pinte (Baron de Giey), Heusden (?), Sint Maria Leerne [Ooidonk] ('t Kint), Destelberghen (Baron Hendrickx), Zwijnaarde (Baron della Faille), Laarne (Count de Ribaucourt), Astene (Count de Kerchove de Denterghem), Lovendegem (4 estates: notary Lamme, van der Varen, Baron Surmont, Baroness Dons), Oostakker (Marquise de Courtebourne), Langerbrugge (P. Blommaert), Gavere (Baroness Grenier), Wetteren (3 estates: van de Woestijne, Baron de la Potterie, Viscount Vilain XIIII), Elseghem ("enfants mineurs de Mr le chevalier de Ghellinck"), Langemark (Viscountess de Patin), Oudegem (Marquis de Courtebourne), Wijnegem (Baron van der Bruggen), Vinderhoute (Dowager Cardon), Gentbrugge (Lauwick), Drongen (?), Petegem (Baron Pycke), Wetteren (van Cromphaut), Bellem (Count de Kerchove), Rumbeke (Count de Limburg Stirum), Schelderode (Van de Poele), Zwijnaarde (Count Goethals), and three with undeciphered mentions. The views are different from those in the collection of Mons University (digitised in DONum), which owns 254 photos by Damseaux, partly unpublished. Ref. DONum (note by C. Gobeaux). Prov. Ex-libris gravé aux armes d'alliance de Christian de la Croix d'Ogimont (1921-?) et Anne d'Hanins de Moerkerke (1928-1951), réf. EPN 1990, 68.
