Lot description

3 parts in one vol., folio (28,5 x 44,7 x 8 cm): front.-[36]-1/482-[2]-483/782-[30], 113-[11] pp.; 14 pl. (2nd front. missing; sl. dampstaining, larger in begin., tear without lack to p. 3, occ. ff. sl. browned, occ. sl. spotting, marg. tears strengthened in pp. 239 and 301, some foxing at end).

Contemp. blind-stamped vellum, large central lozenge fleuron, smaller ones and fillets on boards, spine with raised bands (lower cover rubbed, rubbing on front, one stain on front cover). Good large-paper copy.

First Dutch edition by W. Séwel (1654-1720) based on the latest French edition of Arnaud d'Andilly (1589-1674) of the standard ancient history of the Jews by Flavius Josephus (37-100). Engr. ill.: frontispiece, 9 double-page ill., 5 maps or plans (one fold.), 209 in-text ill. by J & C. Luyken and title-vignette. Title in red & black. Printed in 2 col.
