Lot description

Antwerp, J.B. Vriens, 1601

Small oblong 8vo: [10 (of 16)]-103 (of 110) maps-[4]-[2]-11 (of 13) maps -[2] pp. (missing maps: 1-5, 100-101 in 1st part, 11-12 in 2nd part; ms. notes on title, some corners missing, some foxing, sl. used).

Old vellum binding (very used).

Incomplete pocket-size atlas of Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" intended as a cheaper option for travellers and students. After the 1st ed. of the "Epitome" in 1588, Filips Galle whose "Speculum Orbis Terrarum" had not been very successful due to its inelegant engraving, gradually started replacing the copperplates. With only 10 old maps left, the majority of the maps in our edition belong to these newly engraved maps. After the death of Cornelis de Jode (1568-1600), Vrients bought the copperplates. Missing are the world map, 4 continental maps, the maps of China and India in the 1st part and of Iceland and Japan in the 2nd part. Ref. Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici III.76, Ort. 58. - van der Krogt IIIA [332:13].
