4to: 213-[1-2 bl.] pp. (toned).

Mod. gold-tooled sp. calf, covers with gilt orn. border and corner pieces, richly gilt spine with raised bands and morocco label, gilt inside border, a.e.g. (sl. rubbed at joints). Very good copy.

First edition of the very rare Latin only version of this highly original emblem book by the Antwerp artist (and teacher of P.P. Rubens) Otho Vaenius (1556-1629). Later editions were enlarged with verses in various vernaculars. Oval engr. portrait of Horace on title and 103 full-page engr. emblems.
