2 vol., 4to: [4]-viii-266, [4]-278-[1] pp.; 133 pl. (some foxing).

Contemp. three-quarter red morocco, red paper boards ruled with a gilt roll-stamp, gilt-orn. flat spines (sl. rubbed). Untrimmed copy.

First edition of this attractive work on medical and useful plants by the French botanist and physician J. Roques (1772-1850). Illustr. with 133 (72, 61) beautiful hand-coloured engraved pl. of plants, with details such as roots, flowers and fruits. Each plant is identified by its common name and the one adopted by Linnaeus. Furthermore the various classification systems of Linnaeus, Tournefort and Jussieu are summarised in the "Discours préliminaire". Roques, born in Valence, studied in Montpellier and moved later to Paris where he became an eminent botanist.
