Lot description

Bruges, H. Crokus, July 1531

Sm. 4to: 60 ff. (some waterstaining & soiling, sm. piece of paper pasted on title, quire D sl. gnawed at in margin, ff. M1 & M4 lacking and supplied in 19th-c. ms.).

Later cardboard wrappers with paper spine (spine broken). Good copy.

Very rare Bruges postincunable with ten essays on the early history of Flanders by the historian, poet and humanist Jacob de Meyere (Vleteren 1491 - Bruges 1552), followed by a Latin poem. An 8vo ed. was publ. the same year by Vorsterman in Antwerp. Title within armorial woodcut border with nine handcoloured coats-of-arms: Austria, Flanders and its cities. Full-page handcoloured woodcut on last page: guarding lion holding the flag of Austria, surrounded by the same arms. Ref.
