Lot description

[Palermo?, 16th-17th c.]

Folio (31,5 x 22 cm): [32]-306-[4] ff., on paper, in Spanish, written by several hands (some spotting and foxing, min. ink stains, marg. wormtrack, last ff. loosening, 2 first ff. with tiny holes without loss).

Contemp. limp. vellum, flat spine ink titled (local stains, part. loosening, lower pastedown with Italian ms. annot.).

Extr. rare document containing copies of letters and official deeds by Kings of Spain to viceroys of Sicily, from the late 16th century to the last third of the 17th century. The register opens with a letter addressed to Marcantonio II Colonna (1535-1584), Duke of Tagliacozzo and Duke and Prince of Paliano, dated 18 Oct. 1583 from San Lorenzo [de El Escorial], and ends with a document mailed on the 28 Jan. 1683. The documents were sent i.a. to Jorge de Cárdenas y Manrique de Lara (1584-1644), Duke of Maqueda and of Nájera; Francisco Ruiz de Castro y de Sandoval-Rojas (1579-1637), Count of Lemos; John of Austria (the Younger) (1629-1679); Claude Lamoral (1618-1679), Prince of Ligne. Some topics: tax legislations of Italy and Sicily, appointments of charges, pensions for cardinals, some judgements, currencies, etc.
