Lot description

Paris, A. Giroux et Cie, 1839

8vo: [6, incl. front.]-76 pp.; 6 pl. (some spotting and soiling on the margins, more obtrusive on (half) title and front. front. affected by a tiny tear).

Contemp. quarter purple shagreen, gilt-orn. spine with 4 raised bands (some sm. def. and rubbings).

Second edition of this extraordinary successful manual, attested by the 39 editions, reprints or translations which succeeded one another in no less than 18 months. It contains Arago's report of July 3, 1839 and that of Gay-Lussac of July 30, as well as Niépce's notice on heliogravure. Daguerre reveals the secret of his methods and gives the procedure to follow for the realization of his process acquired by the State. He thus discharged the obligation to make it public. "Véritable seconde édition sortie des presses de Félix Malteste qui a suivi assez scrupuleusement le texte de la première édition. Il n'en existe qu'une seule émission." (Jammes).
